This is an early example of multi-purpose furniture. The hinged seat lifts up to reveal storage space below. This form combines the functions of a cassone (an Italian marriage chest particularly associated with Florence) and a sofa. It would have stood against the wall of a papatial house, and was probably reduced in length during the 19th century. The square, boxed arms have the heads of men carved into them.
