GRAFFITI "NO SURRENDER" ON THE SOUTH SIDE OF THE STADUIM LJUDSKI VRT
Graffiti is a specific type of visual expression marking urban spaces, which often verges on art or vandalism in appearance. If the graffiti is unique and artistically honed, it may be considered as a visual art form. The graffiti created by Teo Ivančič aka Teoson undoubtedly has artistic value and complements the urban image of Maribor. Although not a football fan himself, he was invited by the Viole, the supporters of the local FC Maribor, to paint their home stadium, thus commemorating the Viole’s 30th anniversary in 2019. Teoson created several graffiti that show their affiliation and loyalty to the club. On the platform on the south side of the stadium, he created a three-dimensional inscription of their well-known slogan: “No surrender.” Its letters are enveloped with barbed wire and stand out against the lighter background. The shadowing of the letters in the traditional purple colour and the image of a football fan holding a scarf in his extended arms are typical of the club. Large-format graffiti is featured also on the west wall of the stadium building. It depicts three half-length portraits of Maribor football players with a raised championship cup and a flag. They are painted in black and white stencil, and the portraits are complemented by the inscription “Home of the Champions”, which emits white rays.
