A fragment of the head of a wooden shovel.
It is the remains of what would probably have been a one-piece shovel carved from oak. An iron strip would have been used to tip the blade to prevent excessive wear and tear.
Wooden shovels were used to collect the coal into the corves before they were dragged to the shaft bottom to be removed from the mine.
