One of around twenty-five leather boots that were found at the Coleorton mine site. The boot has leather laces and its detached sole can be seen above it.
Most of the boots found consisted of little more than worn out fragments of leather, several with evidence of patching and repair. One child's boot was found, clearly cut down from an old full size one.
During the late medieval and early post medieval periods worn boots were often put into buildings to ward off evil spirits. It is not known whether this was common in mine workings, but it could be an explanation as to why so many worn boots were excavated from the site.
