This coat is one of only three long coats of late 1600s type found in Western Europe. It was discovered in an open roadway of the mine, in the main longwall workings, by one of the open-cast mine supervisors at Coleorton. It confirms that the Coleorton mine site is not only significant because of its late medieval history, but also in providing evidence of post medieval activity.
The coat was taken to the Textile Conservation Centre at Hampton Court Palace where it was studied and reconstructed on a specially made 'body' by costume conservators.
