Telephone used for communication in a mine. It is housed in a plastic casing making it 'intrinsically safe' for use underground. It was also designed to be water and shock-proof. This one was used at the Snibston colliery from the 1960s until its closure in 1985.
Telephones were installed at strategic points throughout the mine to provide a communication link between the surface and the underground workings. They ensured the smooth day to day working of the mine and were essential in getting information to the surface in the event of an accident.
On the phone case is written a final inscription highlighting the 38 year career of a Snibston miner whose initials were G.S.
