The Roman Villa, discovered near Drayton, on a hillside above the River Welland, was a large and busy farm. It was also a luxurious family home. This mosaic, dating to the mid 4th century AD hints at some of this luxury. Mosaics, baths and large rooms with under floor heating all suggest the opulence lifestyle of the family who once lived there.
In the centre of the mosaic, where decades of passing feet wore down the tiny pieces of coloured stone and tile you can see later repairs. It is likely that this crude renovation reflects the declining fortunes of the villa and the family that owned it. By the end of the century the villa had been abandoned.
