This pottery pitcher is one of a group of objects found in the well of the medieval castle of the Hastings family at Ashby-de-la-Zouch.
This style of earthenware is called 'Midland Purple', after its purple-fired glaze and origins in the Midlands. This example is likely to have been made at the potteries in the nearby village of Ticknall, South Derbyshire, but similar vessels were made at Chilvers Coton, Nuneaton.
