Description: Sampler, linen, embroidered with polychrome silks in cross, satin, double running, Florentine, tent and eyelet stitch. There is a selvedge at the bottom; the other edges are turned under and stitched. The sampler comprises horizontal bands of repeat border patterns, 'boxers', classical columns and trees, four alphabets, a verse supporting the monarchy, a commemoration of the maker's mother and a final band including two coronets and the inscriptio'. The first verse reads 'G R/ GOD BLESS THE K / ING PRESERVE THE / CRON DEFEND THE / CHVRCH TREAD R / EBELLS DOWN ME /1 719', and the other ' MISTRES IONE ELDRIDGE DIED IN / THE 1 DAY OF MARCH IN THE Y / EAR OF OUR LORD GOD 1714 / IS IN THE 48 YEAR OF HER AGE ME / GOD BLESS KING GEORGE./ MARY ELDRIG GORG ELDRIG IE WE HE / 1719
