Bird coffins. These would have contained the mummified remains of sacred birds such as the falcon. Late Dynastic-Graeco Roman (747 BC - AD 395).
Bird coffin. Hollow wooden bird shape with headdress of double crown. 29cm high. Traces of gilt. Modern blue paint on one side. Mummified bird of prey in interior. Such birds were specially bred and killed to be given as votive offerings to gods. Some coffins do not contain birds but this one has been X-rayed and a bird was discovered.
