A glass statue. Glass is not known in Egypt before the late Middle Kingdom (1795 BC). when it was first introduced it was very expensive and regarded as an artificial precious stone. Late Dynastic. (747-332 BC).

Moulded purple glass sculpture of seated figure. 110mm high. Glass making did not appear until 18th Dynasty in Egypt. This figure, if genuine, is proabably Late Dynastic. 11cm high. A similar cobalt blue glass statue but of Taweret is published in Lacovara et al 2001, 'The Collector's Eye...' p152-154. Our piece may possibly be a fake as it is made from a bluish purple marbled glass which has sometimes used for fakes. The piece was purchase by Wellcome in 1919.
