This pottery bowl has a painting of a boat on it. Small pots were often put in graves in the predynastic period. They may have contained scented oil. (D-ware, Naqada II-III 3800-3200 BC). The Naqada Period is named after the type site in Upper Egypt, just north of Thebes.

The current opinion is that D-ware originates in Upper Egypt in the Naqada-Abydos area. This artefact is illustrated in the MacGregor catalogue 1922 pl. LIII and mentioned by Newberry in 'List of Vases with Cult-signs' LAAA 5, 1913, p138. The artefact fits the description for lot 1757, 'the smaller with a two-cabined boat on each side; found opposite Gebelein'.
