The mill was probably for grinding pepper, in walnut with marquetry decoration including coats of arms. The square mill shows concave-sided projections at each side with piercings to fix the mill securely down. A deep plinth with cushion frieze decorated in marquetry, opens at one side as a drawer, into which the paper falls from the grinding mechanism above, within a square-based, concave sided tapering drum. Above this is an octagonal collar into which the handle would fix. The sides of the drum are veneered in burr walnut, with scrolled marquetry in paler woods.
