Jacquard woven wool. This was the largest size of shawl known as a "plaid". It is said to have been worn by a bride at her wedding in 1863 but it is probably a "kirking shawl". For Scottish women there was a strong tradition of wearing a shawl to the first church service after her marriage and again after the birth if her first child. These "kirking" shawls were often wedding gifts and an essential part of the trousseau.
