Elliptical Spanish ' Fontange ' fan with wooden guards which are carved to resemble tree bark and painted pale blue. The 16 sticks carved in the shape, but left plain and flat and also painted pale blue. They are all held together by a metal rod and loop onto which is attached a length of wide pale green ribbed silk ribbon. The leaves are stiffened muslin, painted with a scene froma Spanish town, incorporating figures, buildings and trees, worked mainly in ochre, browns and greens with a touch of white and red. The fan, at its elliptical upper edge is bound with pale green fabric tape. The box it is kept in is oblong, made from card, and covered with a slightly textured paper in a fan pattern, in brown and old gold.
