The Hiéron is inhabited architecture, a singular place and one of France's rare purpose-built museums.
The building was finished in 1893 but has only recently been protected as an historic monument. The imposing edifice is surprisingly airy inside because of the light filtering through its glazed roof.
Its delicate presentation is a subtle combination of meaning and form, offering a journey through art, history, anthropology and religion.
The collection ranges from a Romanesque portal from the church of Anzy-le-Duc (12th century), to a remarkable ensemble of 17th and 18th century Italian paintings and works by about thirty 20th and 21th century.
The museum also houses the exceptional National Treasure (1904) crafted by the jeweller Joseph Chaumet.
