Museo "Ángel Orensanz y Artes de Serrablo"

The “Angel Orensanz and Folk Art” Museum was inaugurated in 1979 thanks to the efforts of the “Amigos del Serrablo” association. From 1975 on, they devoted themselves to collecting old everyday tools and objects from the abandoned villages in the area with the intention of preserving a cultural heritage which had started to disappear with the coming of the industrial society.

Along with the ethnologic collection, one of the most complete in the Pyrenean area, a few works by Angel Orensanz, a well-known sculptor born in Huesca, can also be seen at the Museum. Angel Orensanz is a member of the board which runs the Museum along with the “Amigos del Serrablo” association and the Sabiñánigo Town Council, which owns the buildings.

The Museum is located in the Puente de Sabiñánigo quarter and consists of two three-storey buildings connected by a cantilevered passage. The first building, dating from the 19th century, is called Casa Batanero (the Fuller’s House) after the original owner’s occupation. This building is a splendid example of the traditional architecture of this area. The second building was constructed in 1998 to enlarge the exhibition space.

All the works on view have their own history, made by the efforts and vicissitudes the Serrablo men and women had to endure in order to get ahead in an often tough and hostile environment (commonly known as Serrablo, Devil’s land).
