Franz Xaver Gruber spent the second half of his life in Hallein, where he was active as the choir director and as a choralist; it was here that most of his musical works were composed. Gruber found his last resting place across from the parish church and in front of his former home - today´s "Silent Night" Museum.
There you can see Gruber´s study with its original furniture and his personal belongings. In a side room the story is told of how this most famous of Chrismas carols was composed and spread throughout the world. As well as the three surviving signed copies of Silent Night. The museum´s main attraction is the guitar on which the parish priest and writer of the originals words, Joseph Mohr, accompanied the song at its debut Performance in 1818.
