Čop’s Birth House in Žirovnica

Čopova rojstna hiša v Žirovnici

Čop’s birth house, locally known as “pri Ovseniku,” is located in the old village center of Žirovnica. The house was purchased in the 1980s on the initiative of local schoolchildren, who organized a nationwide fundraising campaign among their peers under the slogan: “Your grandfather for Prešeren’s house, your father for Finžgar’s, and you for Čop’s birth house.” The renovated house, with a memorial room dedicated to Matija Čop, was opened to the public in 1994. Today, it serves as an event venue and an information point for the Municipality of Žirovnica.

Matija Čop (1797–1835), the first Slovenian linguist, literary historian, and librarian, was one of the greatest European scholars of his time. Through his cultural and political activities, he helped raise the cultural awareness of the Slovenian nation. He spoke nineteen languages. As an exceptional expert on classical and contemporary literature, Čop had a significant influence on his close friend France Prešeren and his poetry.
