İstanbul Modern
Turkey’s first privately-owned museum devoted to the modern and contemporary arts, İstanbul Modern was founded in 2004 with the aim of fostering an appreciation for art among the general public. Located on the European shore of the Bosphorus, the museum quickly became a multidimensional center in which people of every age and description come together to make culture a part of their everyday lives.
In addition to permanent and temporary exhibition halls, a photography gallery, a new media space, and a video section, İstanbul Modern also has an extensive art library; a cinema in which masterworks from the history of filmmaking, new productions, and examples of films and documentaries by Turkish and other countries’ artists are shown; a museum shop which offers a wide selection of items that blend art and design; and a cafe and restaurant with an unrivalled view of the Bosphorus and the Historical Peninsula.
Our museum is a cultural and social meeting place that calls on people to come and create and to engage in artistic endeavors of their own. Education is an important part of İstanbul Modern’s mission and many different programs and activities are organized to promote a love of art among everyone –especially children and young people– and encourage them to actively take part.
Through activities that are specially designed to simultaneously appeal on several different levels, visitors at İstanbul Modern can witness the past and present of art in Turkey while catching glimpses of its future through interaction with distinguished national and international practitioners of contemporary art.
As a center of attraction, İstanbul Modern strengthens the creative exchange among Turkish and international artists while also serving as a showcase displaying Turkey’s artistic and cultural accomplishments for the whole world to see.
