Ballenberg, Swiss Open-Air Museum

Ballenberg, Freilichtmuseum der Schweiz

Come in and have a look round the kitchens, bedrooms and parlours of houses and farm buildings from the 14th to 19th centuries reconstructed here in their natural state. In the extensive grounds, a total area of 660 000 square meters, typical houses and settlement from almost every canton in Switzerland can be seen. In our workshops, craftsmen, using authentic tools, demonstrate old handcrafts and trades: from wood-carving, basket-weaving, spinning, weaving, bobbin lace making and forging to making cheese and baking. You can see them close-up and even have a go yourself. Here at Ballenberg, you and your children can see examples of all the different kinds of farm animals which are to be found in Switzerland. You are even able to stroke some of them. There are a few animals which cannot be seen anywhere else in the country, apart from at Ballenberg. We revive ancient folk customs, from old-time costumes and dance to linen processing and our traditional autumn market.

When you are feeling hungry and thirsty, our three pleasant restaurants will be glad to serve you tasty Swiss specialities. However, if you prefer to bring your own food, you may enjoy a barbecue at one of our picnic areas using the wood provided.
