Pilonova galerija Ajdovščina

The Pilon Gallery, established in 1973, was created from the artistic legacy donated to the town of Ajdovščina by Dominique Pilon, the son of painter and photographer Veno Pilon, after his father’s death in 1970. It is the first monographic gallery in Slovenia founded on an artist’s estate and holds the status of an authorized museum. Initially, it comprised two town houses—one of them Pilon’s family home, where the painter’s father once ran a bakery. The renovation was designed by the Ajdovščina architect Svetozar Križaj (1921–1996), who received the Plečnik Award for it in 1976. Between 2023 and 2025, the gallery gained new exhibition spaces and storage facilities through renovation and the annexation of the neighboring Rustja House. At the same time, the gallery itself underwent a comprehensive renovation of both its interior and exterior, along with new program content.

The permanent exhibition of Veno Pilon’s works includes not only artworks—paintings, drawings, prints, and sculptures—but also documentary material and personal objects. His photographic oeuvre completes the picture of Pilon as a versatile artist. From autumn 2025 onwards, a new permanent display of Pilon’s works offers insight into a reconstruction of his studio, along with new digital content. In addition to Pilon’s collection, two other collections have gradually been formed: the Collection of Works by Pilon’s Friends and the Vipavski Križ Collection. The gallery also hosts temporary exhibitions by local, Slovenian, and international artists, and it has a rich library.
