Maribor through the lens of an amateur photographer

Eduard Vedernjak has been surrounded by photographs since grammar school. After university graduation, he bought his first camera, a Russian Kiev. He purchased additional equipment on a trip to Moscow. Between 1964 and 2003, he was capturing moments at construction sites, during field trips, personal trips and holidays, in the mountains, in the gym. He also took numerous family photographs. After the birth of his daughter Mojca, he created an extensive collection of children portraits. He believes that his best shots resulted from a considerate selection of themes based on his ever sparing use of photographic film.

After 2003, Eduard Vedernjak began using the digital camera. He was drawn by nature, flowers, plants from the home garden, trees, insects, clouds and sunsets. In the most recent period, he has been captured by the urban architecture. His shots of sculptures from the renowned Maribor Forma viva and of Drava bridges were made last spring.

With the expert assistance of Mag Gerhard Angleitner, we have made a selection from the extensive oeuvre of more than 1200 digital shots that Eduard Vedernjak donated to the National Liberation Museum Maribor, to present his main preoccupation in photographs. The exhibition comprises his shots of Maribor taken from Meljski hrib and Stolni vrh hills, as well as the bustle of Maribor streets and squares. Showing his most pristine feelings are photographs of the Maribor City Park, Lent and of Drava bridges. He was also taken by the view of the remote Church of St Mary at Gorca above Malečnik, of the Church of St Barbara at Kalvarija, of the Shrine of St Mary at Piramida, and of the contemporary sacral architecture of the 1980's, St Mary Mother of the Church at Pobrežje.
