Exhibition „Halina's time in Gerderts' art“

Exhibition „Halina's time in Gerderts' art“. H. Kairiūkštytė-Jacinienė and Gerderts Eliass art from Jelgava (Latvia) Museum.

Ģederts Eliass (1887–1975) was an artist in whom interest is growing as time passes. His creative work was rich and varied, he was gifted with a strong and unique talent and enormous capacity for work. He was an artist who was distinguished and respected, even feared, and his personality has always been shrouded in mystery. That was defined not only by the difficult times in which he lived, but also by his self-restraint and aloofness.

More than a 1,000 oil paintings, hundreds of paintings in watercolours and pastels, thousands of drawings, articles on different art subjects - this is the shining legacy he has inscribed on the pages of Latvia’s art history.

This exhibition features works by Ģedert Eliass created in the 1930’s – a time when he lived with his life’s companion Halina Kairiūkštytė-Jacinienė. His wife’s portrait can be seen at this exhibition. During the 1930’s Ģedert Eliass painted many portraits of Halina which were significant not only to his creative portfolio but to Latvian portraiture in general. The 1930’s were a very prolific time for Eliass when he created many of his best works.

In this exhibition we become acquainted with Halina Kairiūkštytė-Jacinienė as an accomplished sketch artist. During her art history studies in Munich and Zurich (early 1920’s), Halina sketched many portraits. She understood people, and her drawings expertly reveal the characters of her subjects. She produced many self-portraits as well, and the scope of her work also included some small watercolours.

Halina Kairiūkštytė-Jacinienė’s sketches are on display for the first time. Nothing was previously known either publically or within the artistic community about this art historian’s creative expressions. Including her sketches as a student, her works number around 200.
