EXHIBITION OF PAINTINGS AND VIDEO WORKS BY EUGENIJUS VARKULEVIČIUS

The exhibition presents paintings and video works of Eugenijus Varkulevičius - painter, film maker and music creator

The exhibition shows video works from the earlier period and recent canvases, and in both periods the artist had focussed his attention on people's relationship with nature and the surrounding environment.

Nothing is more abstract and siurrealistic than nature. E. Varkulevičius is inspired by a particular place which is later transformed to abstraction. Both paintings and video works are based on intuition, although the artist strives to control the situation, so the intensity or the meditative concentration always occurs in the right place. According to E. Varkulevičius, the exhibition visitors will be able to grasp the poetry of everyday life and immerse themselves in quiet meditation.

During the exhibition E. Varkulevičius‘ films will be shown: The Cinema without camera duration: 31 min, 1995-2002m NYC AFA, FLUXUS 30 YEAR duration: 1 h 32 min, NYC AFA, Legends of the Chelsea Hotel duration: 56 min, 2000 NYC AFA, Konzert COYOTE III J.Beuys, Nam June Paik, duration: 52 min, 1997 NYC AFA.

The exhibition on the first floor of the gallery presents the earlier creation of Eugenijus Varkulevičius (from the cycle "The names of the break generation").

The first significant introduction of Eugenijus Varkulevičius (b. 1956) to the public was the exhibition inVilnius, in 1985 together with other artists from Kaunas - Audronė Petrašiūnaitė, Algimanta Stankutė, Pranas Griušys, Eglė Velaniškytė and Aleksas Andriuškevičius.

The then young artists stood out for intimacy in their works. If compared to the global, community-based topics by the older generation, the young artists with their works seemed real hotspurs.

Varkulevičius’ paintings had one more distinctive feature – the religious motives. However, the Christian themes were officially unacceptable, so the artist was a rare participant at exhibitions. One of them was removed the next day after the opening in 1985 in the Artists’ House.

In 1990 Varkulevičius left for Germany, later he settled in the United States. After the eleven years spent in New York, Varkulevičius’ style of creation had altered.
