The naturalist Alfred Russel Wallace is well known for arriving at the Theory of Evolution by Natural Selection independently of Charles Darwin. He grew up and was educated in Hertford before travelling extensively, exploring and mapping previously uncharted parts of the Amazon.
Wallace became the world authority on the flora and fauna of Malaysia and Indonesia. In 1899 he moved to Parkstone with his family and by 1902 had built a house, Old Orchard, in Broadstone where he remained until his death in 1913.
Illustrated by a wealth of colourful specimens, many of which were collected by Wallace himself, World of Wallace brings together a wide range of plants and animals held by museums and institutions around the country as well as examining the Victorian love of taxidermy which funded his incredible expeditions.
