Clouds are red

The first total war in the history of mankind, World War I became total by embracing in its fronts the entire civilian population as well as soldiers. From the initial enthusiasm and expectations for the war to come to an end by December 1914, each month of fighting brought an increase to sufferings of the civilian population. The war had thus changed their everyday life as well as habits and customs. After men left for global battlefields, a major change occurred in terms of the emergence of or stimulation for women's emancipation. We have to be aware, however, that it was merely about survival and only evaluated as emancipation in subsequent eras when women became aware that their position could be different. Women's concerns no longer pertained to raising children exclusively, as they began working in factories and fields, thus becoming the driving force of families and the economy. They had to make contact with state institutions to obtain various social benefits, and take care of the financial situation in their families. Inflation caused an increase in prices and a growing shortage of basic necessities. Except for war profiteers, the living conditions toughened in all walks of life. Rural population was particularly affected by war as peasant boys and men were mainly integrated in infantry where the death toll was much higher than in other army branches.
