Karl Kotzenberg (1866‒1940) and his wife Anna Kotzenberg (1873‒1956) led a colourful life at the centre of public attention. They surrounded themselves with precious art objects and awarded commissions to contemporary artists. These activities corresponded to their concept of art patronage “wholeheartedly dedicated to the cultural life of a nation”. The Kotzenbergs hold a special status among the collectors and donors of the twentieth century. Karl Kotzenberg was a co-founder of various trade associations and provided substantial support to numerous projects such as the Frankfurt university, founded in 1914, and the Altstadtbund (Friends of the Old Town). With a selection from the Kotzenberg art holdings, the exhibition retraces the life and generous outlook of this exceptional Frankfurt couple.
