Panopticon – The Hidden Treasures of the Wallraf

Thanks to a top-notch collection of paintings and sculptures from the late 13th to the early 20th century, the Wallraf numbers among the foremost art galleries in Europe. Yet the three floors of Cologne’s oldest museum show only about a third of its treasures. The majority of its around 1,500 paintings languish in the depot, where only the chosen few are permitted to enter. But to mark its 150th anniversary, the Wallraf will lift the cloak of secrecy from this treasure trove in Winter 2011. Under the title “Panopticon”, the museum in Cologne will present a special exhibition showcasing hundreds of paintings and sculptures that previously have never or only seldom been shown. With that the visitors will be able to embark on a unique voyage of discovery through 700 years of art history. And also to choose their own personal favourite among the paintings. The picture that receives the most votes will be put on show for a whole year in the permanent collection.
