Iman Issa. Material

Iman Issa (born in Cairo in 1979) is interested in history and its manifestations in urban public space in relation to personal experience and individual memory. In her sculptural displays she links a minimalist formal language with short descriptive texts which are integral to her works and allude to concrete objects, situations, and contexts. Though being almost narrative her sculptural displays  tend to elude explicit definition and identification. From the end of June to the beginning of September 2015, Iman Issa is Artist-in-Residence at the 21er Haus and will present her series Material in an exhibition at the 21er Raum.

Iman Issa lives and works in Cairo and New York. Her work has been on view in numerous international solo and group exhibitions, most recently, among others, at the MACBA in Barcelona, at the 12th Sharjah Biennial, the 8th Berlin Biennial, the MuHKA in Antwerp, the Tensta Konsthall in Spånga, the New Museum in New York, the KW Institute of Contemporary Art in Berlin, the Sculpture Center in New York, and the Contemporary Image Collective in Cairo. Awards include the HNF-MACBA Award (2012) and the Abraaj Group Art Prize (2013). Iman Issa teaches at the Cooper Union School of Art in New York.
