"Full Moon" – the exhibition is dedicated to the 100th birth anniversary of Adolfas Vaičaitis

The exhibition presents a wide panorama of the artist's oeuvre from the early works to the abstractions. There were three periods in the artist‘s creation – Kaunas, Germany and Australia. While in Lithuania, A. Vaičaitis mainly illustrated books for children (L. Dovydėnas Lapin‘s Wedding, J. Balys Lithuanian Tales, etc.), periodicals, created prints. Shrove-tide  (1939), Fishermen (1939), Apple picking (4th decade of the 20th c.) are the works that mark the artistic maturity of the painter.

In 1944, A. Vaičaitis left for Germany where his creation made him widely famous. Among the works – the album of lithographs Vaičaitis. Sieben Original Lithographien (1948), with texts by the famous Estonian art critic Alexis Rannitas, and illustrations for Julius Kaupas‘ book Doctor Kripštukas in a Hell (1948). Texts by J. Kaupas, who was called a Lithuanian Hoffmann, and   illustrations by Vaičaitis is an impressive result by two professionals.

A striking change in A. Vaičaitis‘ creation occurred in the end of the 6th decade of the 20th c., living already in Australia. The artist abandoned the traditional linotype or wood carving techniques, turning resolutely towards abstract art. Colourful and emotional, his monotypes convey deep inner feelings.

The major part of exhibits is a property of the M. K. Čiurlionis National Museum of Art including the gifted works by the artist as well as the Melbourne M. K. Čiurlionis discussion club. The Lithuanian Art Museum, the Šiauliai University Library and the Kaunas Public Library also have lent the exhibits.
