Gisèle Freund - 1st of May 1932

As a student Gisèle Freund was present when in Frankfurt on 1st of May 1932 labour unions, Social Democrats, the Communist Party and left-wing student groups protested against the government and the increasing National Socialists presence. Her pictures – shot with a brand new Leica camera – are unique historical testimonies which already show her eye for scenes and stories for which she became one of the most important female photographers of the 20th century, after she fled to Paris.
The historische museum frankfurt  exhibits those strong and haunting pictures which were donated to the museum by Margarethe and Dr. Martin Murtfeld in January 2015.
