Ken Charlton

Although drawing featured prominently throughout my teaching career, I did not turn to painting until after retiring in 1995 persuaded by my wife that I would need 'something to occupy my spare time'. After joining my local art society, I initially experimented with a variety of mediums in my painting, but found greatest satisfaction in using watercolours. Most of my paintings feature landscapes, some form of architecture, or coastal subjects encountered locally and during travels both at home and abroad. While making notes and sketches on location, I commonly take photographs to capture fine details of what can be rapid changes in tone and colour. Time spent in carefully selecting and `framing a particular composition, affords me greater freedom to concentrate later upon my own interpretation of the scene.
