In 2014, to mark the 150th anniversary of the birth of the artist, the Toulouse-Lautrec Museum prepared the exhibition "Toulouse-Lautrec - Maurice Joyant, a friend, a collector".
Maurice Joyant (1864-1930) was Lautrec’s boyhood friend and their relationship deepened over the course of their lifetimes. In 1891, Joyant became chief purchaser and director of the famous Paris art gallery of Boussod, Valadon et Cie, where he organized the first retrospective of Lautrec’s work in 1893. In 1898 he staged a second exhibition, at the Goupil Gallery in London. Along with Italian printmaker Michele Manzi and art dealer Jean Boussod, Joyant formed a publishing house for original prints, including Lautrec. He was largely responsible for persuading Lautrec’s mother, the Comtesse Adèle de Toulouse-Lautrec, to present her collection to the Musée Toulouse-Lautrec at Albi.
The exhibition presents some exceptional paintings from his personal collection and highlights the ties of friendship between the two men.
Exhibition in partnership with the Mitsubishi Ichigokan Museum, Tokyo with the exceptional support of the National Library of France and the participation of the Musée d'Orsay.
