Art in Revolution: Liverpool 1911

‘Art in Revolution: Liverpool 1911’ celebrates a ground-breaking art exhibition that took place in Liverpool 100 years ago amidst great social unrest in the city. Featuring works by van Gogh, Matisse, Gauguin and Signac, this exhibition brings together a mixture of works from the 1911 show and those similar in style and period.

The original show was called ‘The Sandon Studios Society exhibition of Modern Art including work by the Post-Impressionists’ and was displayed at the Bluecoat (formerly known as the Liberty Buildings) in Liverpool, from 4 March to 1 April 1911.

‘Art in Revolution: Liverpool 1911’ also highlights the wider socio-political context of the 1911 exhibition and the art establishment’s reaction to it.

This exhibition is part of the Liverpool and the World Exhibition Series, part-funded by the European Union. It is also part of the City of Radicals programme.
