We are hardly aware of it: fungi occur almost everywhere and have a far-reaching significance for our lives. They are used as “mushrooms” in our kitchens; without fungi the production of many foodstuffs, e.g. bread, pizza, kinds of cheese and beverages such as beer and wine would be impossible. Some species of fungi cause diseases in people, animals and plants, others are poisonous or trigger hallucinations. Fungi appear in mysticism and fairytales, where they are considered as tokens of good fortune. And the biggest living organism of the world is not the blue whale but a fungus.
