Exhibition: Wright Inspired

Produced during Wright’s own lifetime, or the two centuries since his death, these rarely seen, and often overlooked, paintings have either been inspired by, or copied directly from, his work. Works by students from Burton College and Derby’s Borrow Wood School add a contemporary element to this exhibition, celebrating Wright’s enduring ability to inspire new generations of budding artists. Today, great importance is laid on the authenticity and originality of works of art, but this a relatively recent perspective. In the 18th century, making copies of the works of other artists, both past and contemporary, was considered an important part of artistic training, and Wright himself copied or adapted from the work of others throughout his career. Wright also completed multiple versions or copies of his own paintings, leaving the identity of some of our paintings open to question. Discover these mysterious works for yourself, and join the debate. Wright Inspired offers lots of other opportunities to get involved: come and try on our newly-created 18th Century Costumes inspired by Wright’s portraits, create your own work in response to the exhibits, tell us what you think about the Institute or take part in events from our activity programme. We hope to inspire you!
