DISPLAY: Memoirs of an Infantry Officer: Paul Hogarth Illustrates Siegfried Sassoon

WWI DISPLAY: In 1981 Paul Hogarth made a series of vivid illustrations for Siegfried Sassoon’s Memoirs of an Infantry Officer, first published 50 years earlier. Sassoon’s novel is based directly on his experiences in the trenches of the First World War, and provided a rich source of inspiration for Hogarth. Marking the centenary of the start of the war this display shows how the imagery of trench warfare and the horrors of the conflict have remained powerful.
