Director Ken Russell's first ever feature film was set in Herne Bay, and came out 50 years ago. The beach, bandstand and pier recognisably starred in the film, and many Herne Bay residents were extras. It became an international cult classic, featuring styles and themes associated with Russell's later films - the cause of so much outrage in their day.
