Writing Home - Letters to Hackney during the First World War

The letters give a poignant insight into the personal lives of Joseph Hughes of the 24th ‘Sportsmen’ Battalion of the Royal Fusiliers who survived the war to come home and marry his sweetheart Lizzie and Alexander Dyall of the Honourable Artillery Company who died at the Battle of Passchendaele. Alexander’s letters were donated to Hackney Archives by a descendant. Joseph’s letters and wartime memorabilia were donated to The Fusilier Museum, London by his grandson Colin McDonald. Do you have letters or items belonging to your relatives who served during the First World War? Hackney Museum would like to hear from local people about their family stories, whether they were born in Hackney or another part of the world or served for a different country.
