Three recipients of the Victoria Cross were born in South Tyneside – Henry Howey Robson of South Shields, Thomas Young of Boldon Colliery and Joseph Henry Collin of Jarrow. John Simpson Kirkpatrick, another son of South Shields, is also remembered for his heroic acts at Gallipoli. But away from the battlefields, there were countless heroes on the home front. This exhibition will explore the key role played by the people of South Tyneside in supporting the war effort, from the seafarers who risked their lives to bring vital foodstuffs and raw materials into the country, to those who worked in the mines, factories and shipyards, including many women.
