The unique work of Thomas Bewick (1753-1828), one of Britain’s greatest engravers and illustrators will be on show at a special exhibition at the Museum of East Anglian Life this Autumn and Winter. A countryman at heart, Bewick loved the life and lore of the fields, the farms and rivers, finding much to cherish in the recording of this lore. His observations of animals and birds are exquisite illustrations, sensitively portraying the creatures in their natural habitat. As an observer of the Eighteenth century world in which he lived, Thomas Bewick left an important record of his times; a record that accompanies and supplements the prints and paintings of William Hogarth, Sir Joshua Reynolds and Thomas Gainsborough as well as the works of writers such as Robert Burns and William Cobbett. The studies he delighted in found an instant and appreciative audience when they first appeared. His preoccupations as a man and as an artist - with wildlife and its habitats, country life and country matters and the character of Humankind - have continued to engage the generations down the centuries.
