Daniel Weil: The Art of Design

Thirty-five years ago, Daniel Weil arrived from his native Argentina to study design at the Royal College of Art. His reaction to political and post-industrial freedom produced the seminal Bag Radio in 1981, followed by a continuous series of inventive objects, products and interiors. This exhibition focuses on the process of design, about how designers think and work. Weil, longstanding Partner at Pentagram, former RCA Professor of Industrial Design and Memphis participant, presents his experience and philosophy of design practice as a manifesto of ‘actions for designers’, exploring how Weil interprets sources, chooses projects, uses colour and creates form. A dazzling exhibition installation, like a wunderkammer, reveals the full range of Weil’s work, sources of inspiration and collections of found objects. The show features a series of new clocks, emphasising Weil’s interest in design as an experience of fundamentals – time, light, space and communication. Weil puts drawing at the heart of design and his 287 sketchbooks are a focus of this witty and thought-provoking exhibition. The exhibition's Guest Curator is Martina Margetts, Senior Tutor in Critical & Historical Studies at the Royal College of Art, who has known Daniel Weil throughout his career.
