Letters Home takes the photographic memorial archive of fallen First World War soldiers held in the Horsmonden Social Club as a basis of research to develop a body of work in response to the local experience of the First World War.
Heffernan contacted local families and historians in her search for information about the home life of the soldiers on the memorial and whether any letters had been sent home by them while they were at war.
Using quotes from letters and other archive material, she has etched these words onto beer and wine glasses, which are currently being served to customers in the Gun and Spitroast Pub and the Horsmonden Social Club.
In addition, Heffernan has created a series of beer mats and small framed mixed media interventions using her drawing and archive materials, on display in both venues, further contextualising the uncovered stories by relating in more detail to the stories of the family members left behind by the soldiers.
