The Anglo Saxon burial at West Hanney and the origins of Wessex

The discovery at West Hanney in 2009, of an opulent, garnet-inlaid brooch has shed new light on the way in which power and identity were expressed in the Upper Thames Valley in the 7th-century AD, a crucial period in the formation of the West Saxon state. In this talk Professor Hamerow will set the brooch and the burial in which it was found into this wider context.
