»PAINTING FOR JOY: New Japanese Painting in the 1990's includes the work of nine Japanese artists who grew up during a period of rapid transition characterized by dramatic economic growth and social change. Although the artists̓pictoral subjects and styles of painting have in common, they are (tightly) bound by the aspiration to make painting a medium of communication that is open to all but subject to individual interpretation.
The displayed works touch upon traditional, as well as modern art horizons and use the classical medium of painting to portray how receptive a young generation of artists is to the experience of the past, how it understands the contemporary, to what extent it has been saturated by the information revolution and what types of meanings are disseminated by today’s new communication technologies. Throughout the exhibit, we are witness to stirring expressions of painting that are both figurative and intimate in meaning and that transform, within the space of the creative oasis, the experience of the personal into that of the public. It is in this way that the expressed images permeate the exclusiveness of the artistic address that is characteristic of modernism and traverse the periphery of painting to incorporate the social space; here, the images create an animated medium for active communication with the audience – with the audience as voyeurs.
