To mark LGBT History Month 2014, The Wiener Library will be screening 'Paragraph 175', a documentary film by Rob Epstein and Jeffrey Freedman about Nazi persecution of homosexuals. Under Hitler's rule, gay men, as well as men suspected to be homosexual, were regularly and often arbitrarily arrested en masse, imprisoned, beaten and often killed with impunity. The Nazis incarcerated some 15,000 men in concentration camps on the grounds of homosexuality, and a large proportion of that number did not survive this fate. This film explores this history through the testimony of five men who did survive. It puts their fate in the wider context of Paragraph 175, the article of the German penal code that criminalised homosexuality between 1871 and 1969. The film will be introduced by Professor William Spurlin (Brunel University, London) author of Lost Intimacies: Rethinking Homosexuality under National Socialism.
