The Triumph and Tragedy of Raoul Wallenberg

One of the most remarkable stories of World War II - that of the Swedish businessman and diplomat Raoul Wallenberg, who worked to protect thousands from Budapest's Jewish community from deportation to Auschwitz - will be revisited in this special lecture by Swedish historian Bengt Jangfeldt in partnership with the Swedish Embassy and I.B. Tauris. After gaining access to previously unexploited Russian and Swedish archival sources, Jangfeldt has been able to reconstruct the events surrounding Wallenberg's arrest by the Soviet secret police. For the first time he will shed new light on the reasons for the arrest and his fate following his disappearance in the prisons of the Soviet Union. The lecture therefore is highly relevant on one of the strands being explored for Holocaust Memorial Day 2014, the topic of forced journeys and journeys from which there was no return. This event is free but places are limited and therefore booking is essential.
