Film Installation: Uriel Orlow ‘Housed Memory’ and ‘The Wiener Library’

As part of the series of events marking Holocaust Memorial Day 2014 at The Wiener Library there will be a one day window of opportunity to see the collections of the Library in an entirely new way. Housed Memory constitutes an exhaustive video archive created by the artist Uriel Orlow depicting the book collections held by the Wiener Library. The film both reveals the collection otherwise hidden from view and at the same time produces the sense of the unknowable. Its accompanying soundtrack consists of staff and volunteers talking about their work. The film will be displayed all day in the Reception and Exhibition Area of the Library, and a further film piece by Orlow, simply entitled ‘The Wiener Library’ will be on show in the Reading Room. The temporary exhibition ‘The Wiener Library at 80’ will also be open for viewing, providing the ideal context for exploring the journey of Alfred Wiener’s Library growing from a small office in Amsterdam to become the largest Holocaust archive in Britain. Uriel Orlow studied Fine Art at Central Saint Martins College of Art & Design and The Slade School of Art, London and philosophy at the University of Geneva, graduating with a PhD in Fine Art in 2002. Orlow’s work is represented in private and public collections internationally.
