Racial Laws and Popular Opinion in Fascist Italy
In this talk, Professor Christopher Duggan will consider a number of the issues surrounding popular opinion in Mussolini's fascist regime and examine the context in which the Italian racial laws were introduced in 1937-8. Drawing on the evidence of private diaries and police reports, the talk will offer some reflections on the responses of ordinary Italians to the laws. Christopher Duggan is Professor of Modern Italian History at the University of Reading and has written extensively on many aspects of 19th and 20th century Italian history. His most recent book, Fascist Voices: An Intimate History of Mussolini's Italy (Bodley Head, 2012), was recently awarded the 2012 Wolfson History Prize.
